Alcune fotografie di mio padre mentre gioca con mio figlio.
Se ne è andato 5 anni prima che nascesse Ulisse.
Le immagini sono chiaramente imperfette e, per qualche motivo, nonostante la mia insistenza nel fornire istruzioni all'intelligenza artificiale, non sembrano fotografie reali, ma mi commuovono comunque.

The images are clearly imperfect and, for some reason, despite my insistence on providing instructions to the artificial intelligence, they don't look like real photographs, but they still move me.

BROKEN MIRROR (AI)

Since 2015, I have explored the Korean peninsula through my photography, investigating social phenomena, the results of economic growth and development in the south, the totalitarian regime in the north, and the resulting side effects they have had on the population.
Broken Mirror is an artwork which uses documentary language, where I blended my perception of North Korea with that of artificial intelligence. I used the Midjourney software, to which I explained in detail the result I wanted to obtain, and I repeated this operation hundreds of times per image until I obtained a result similar to the one I had envisioned.
I inserted a foreign element into the scenes of the daily life of North Koreans, in the form of insects which grow bigger and more intrusive until they look as if they can control people. Finally, North Koreans themselves turn into insects, thus bringing the endured domination to completion.
The idea at the root of this project is about my job as a documentary photographer on North Korea together with my fascination for science fiction and dystopian scenes – from black and white photography by the great photographers of the past to physical body modifications which are typical of David Cronenberg’s films. In a sense, I drew from my personal database of images, videos, considerations, influences and fears, perhaps not too differently from what artificial intelligence did when putting together the images I wanted, often adding unexpected elements that were out of my control.
Broken Mirror is, therefore, the result of a compromise between myself and artificial intelligence, where the exceptional nature of North Korean society, strongly influenced by one of the harshest totalitarian regimes in the world – which, in actual fact, isolates the country and its citizens – is represented by adding an alien element, in a sort of Kafkaesque metamorphosis.
On a second level of reading, this external element, in the form of insects, is a metaphor for the invasive and controlling nature of technology and artificial intelligence in society in general. The use of the Midjourney software (at the time of creating this project, it was in version 4, very immature and difficult to manage) represented my renunciation of complete control over the final result, as this technology often adds unexpected and not always correctable elements. Thus, I too ended up being a victim.

Dal 2015 ho esplorato la penisola coreana attraverso la mia fotografia, indagando i fenomeni sociali, i risultati della crescita economica e dello sviluppo nel sud, il regime totalitario nel nord e gli effetti collaterali che questi hanno avuto sulla popolazione.
Broken Mirror è un lavoro artistico che utilizza il linguaggio documentaristico, in cui ho fuso la mia percezione della Corea del Nord con quella di un'intelligenza artificiale. Ho utilizzato il software Midjourney, a cui ho spiegato nel dettaglio il risultato che volevo ottenere, ripetendo l'operazione per centinaia di volte per ogni immagine, finché non ho ottenuto un risultato simile a quello che avevo immaginato.
Ho inserito nelle scene di vita quotidiana dei nordcoreani un elemento estraneo, sotto forma di insetti che assumono dimensioni sempre più grandi e invadenti, al punto che sembrano avere il controllo sulle persone. Infine, i nordcoreani stessi si trasformano in insetti, completando così il dominio subìto.
L'idea alla base di questo progetto si riferisce al mio lavoro di fotografo documentarista sulla Corea e alla mia passione per la fantascienza e gli scenari distopici; alla fotografia in bianco e nero dei grandi fotografi del passato, ma anche all'alterazione fisica del corpo tipica dei film di David Cronenberg. In un certo senso, ho attinto al mio personale database di immagini, video, riflessioni, suggestioni e paure, forse in maniera non troppo distante da quanto ha fatto l'intelligenza artificiale per assemblare le immagini che volevo, spesso inserendo elementi inaspettati sui quali io non avevo il controllo completo.
Broken Mirror è quindi il risultato di un compromesso tra me e l’intelligenza artificiale, dove l'eccezionalità della società nordcoreana, fortemente influenzata da uno dei regimi totalitari più duri al mondo, che isola di fatto il Paese e i suoi abitanti, è rappresentata attraverso l’inserimento di un elemento alieno, in una sorta di metamorfosi kafkiana.
A un secondo livello di lettura, questo elemento esterno, sotto forma di insetti, è metafora della natura invasiva e controllante della tecnologia e dell'intelligenza artificiale nella società in generale. L'uso del software Midjourney (al momento della creazione di questo progetto era nella versione 4, molto immatura e difficile da gestire) ha rappresentato la mia rinuncia al controllo completo sul risultato finale, poiché questa tecnologia spesso aggiunge elementi inaspettati e non sempre correggibili. Così, anch'io sono finito per essere una vittima.
