York è rinomata per essere la città più infestata d'Europa e le sue affascinanti stradine medievali non fanno che amplificare questa atmosfera. Passeggiando tra questi antichi vicoli, ci si può imbattere in negozi unici, come The York Ghost Merchants, che catturano perfettamente l'essenza spettrale della città.
Qui si trova anche The Shambles (l'antica strada dei macellai), con i suoi edifici a graticcio che si sporgono sopra la testa dei passanti. Questa strada, che ha ispirato la famosa Diagon Alley di Harry Potter, è tanto incantevole quanto affollata. Ma se si ha la pazienza di attendere le 21, quando si svuota, sarà possibile godersela in solitudine, avvolti nel silenzio della notte.
Tra le esperienze che desideravo vivere c'era quella di seguire una delle note visite guidate, a tema fantasmi, che si svolgono dal tramonto in poi. Ho scelto "The Ghost Hunt of York", e all'ora stabilita mi sono ritrovato con una quarantina di altri partecipanti nei pressi del punto di ritrovo.
Qui, un uomo alto e magro, vestito di nero dalla testa ai piedi, cilindro compreso, è apparso con passo deciso e sguardo penetrante. Senza dire una parola, solo con un cenno, ci ha invitati a seguirlo e così è iniziata una narrazione suggestiva e, a tratti, esilarante di storie e leggende della città.
L'alternanza tra teatrali invocazioni ai fantasmi, effetti artigianali un po' kitsch, gag comiche e scenette ironiche con volontari presi dal pubblico ha fatto volare i novanta minuti della visita. Alla fine, ho avuto il tempo per un ritratto posato del misterioso uomo in nero, prima che svanisse nei vicoli bui da cui era emerso.
York is renowned for being the most haunted city in Europe and its charming medieval streets only amplify this atmosphere. Strolling through these ancient alleys, one can come across unique shops, such as The York Ghost Merchants, that perfectly capture the spooky essence of the city.
Here you will also find The Shambles (the old butchers' street), with its half-timbered buildings jutting above the heads of passers-by. This street, which inspired Harry Potter's famous Diagon Alley, is as charming as it is crowded. But if you have the patience to wait until 9pm, when it empties out, you can enjoy it in solitude, enveloped in the silence of the night.
Among the experiences I wanted to have was to follow one of the well-known ghost-themed guided tours that take place from dusk onwards. I chose 'The Ghost Hunt of York', and at the appointed time I found myself with about forty other participants near the meeting point.
Here, a tall, thin man, dressed in black from head to toe, including top hat, appeared with a determined step and a piercing gaze. Without saying a word, just nodding, he invited us to follow him and thus began an evocative and, at times, hilarious narration of stories and legends of the city.
The alternation of theatrical invocations to ghosts, slightly kitschy handicraft effects, comic gags and humorous skits with volunteers from the audience made the ninety-minute visit fly by. At the end, I had time for a posed portrait of the mysterious man in black, before he vanished into the dark alleys from which he had emerged.
